Why Braces?

Why Braces?

A beautiful smile is the end result most people think of when considering orthodontic treatment. Many people feel more confident in their smiles after their braces are removed.

Orthodontic Treatment

Braces often are made of metal, plastic or ceramic. They are either brackets bonded to the teeth or made of material that can be put on and removed by the patient. To move the teeth into the correct position, the braces place a gentle, constant force in a carefully-controlled direction. Braces have come a long way since they were invented. In the past, metal bands with a bracket were placed around each tooth. Today’s orthodontic treatments offer convenience and many choices. For instance, patients have the option of brackets that are clear or metallic, and they can choose the color ties that hold the wire in the brackets. The latest materials move teeth faster than the original models and with less discomfort.

The Purpose of Braces

The obvious benefit of braces is the beautiful smile that results from orthodontic treatment. The not-so-obvious results are endless. Straight and healthy teeth make patients feel more self-confident in their smiles. The short-term discomfort that may accompany braces at times is endurable when you consider the decades of satisfaction that you will receive once the treatment is complete.

Length of Treatment

Treatment time typically ranges from one to three years, depending on the severity of the patient’s problem. Each patient responds differently to orthodontic treatment, so estimating a completion date from the beginning can be a challenge. However, patients who consistently follow “the doctor’s orders” and comply with the usage of elastics and headgear will receive the most efficient treatment.
