Minneapolis Orthodontist Offers Tips for Keeping Clear Aligners Clean

EAGAN, ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – If you wear clear aligners or retainers, you know that keeping them clean and odor-free can be a challenge.

Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, a Minneapolis orthodontist, has a couple of tips for keeping Invisalign and other types of clear plastic aligners looking good.

Avoid Toothbrush/Toothpaste
Normally, a toothbrush and toothpaste are great for cleaning a variety of appliances, but not in the case of clear, plastic aligners, said Eisenhuth, a Minneapolis Invisalign provider. The mildly abrasive texture of toothpaste scratches the plastic and changes it from clear to cloudy over time.

It’s also difficult for a toothbrush to reach all of the crevasses in an aligner, which allows plaque and tartar to build.

Bleach
As odd as it may sound, soaking aligners in a bowl of water with a couple of drops of bleach in it can work wonders when it comes to keeping aligners clean and bright.

“The bleach actually works with the materials in the aligner to make them clearer over time,” said the Minneapolis braces expert, adding that it is important to rinse the aligner well after soaking it so the odor and taste of bleach aren’t detected when wearing the aligner.

Cleaners
Denture cleaners are another option for keeping aligners looking their best. There also are some cleaners designed specifically for orthodontic appliances, including Retainer Brite, Ortho Clean and Retainer Splash, just to name a few.

These products kill bacteria and germs, help remove tartar and plaque, and brighten and clean aligners and other types of orthodontic appliances.

It’s important to keep clear aligners and other removable appliances such as night guards, retainers and mouth guards clean, Eisenhuth said. Doing so will prevent odors and bacteria from accumulating.
