It’s Easy Being Green for Eagan Orthodontist
Thursday, April 2, 2009- ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – There are few industries that have not gotten onto the “green” bandwagon in some fashion in recent years, and orthodontics is no different.
Eagan Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth has made several environmentally friendly changes to her Eagan orthodontics practice that have done more than decrease its carbon footprint.
“What I like about many of the changes we’ve made in our practice over the years is that we’re also increasing convenience for patients and parents of patients, while adopting practices that are considered more Earth-friendly,” Eisenhuth said.
Going Paperless
For example, Eisenhuth became one of the first orthodontists in Minnesota to go paperless about eight years ago when she switched to digital recordkeeping software to replace paper charts. Today, all patient medical records can be accessed and updated in the exam rooms via computers during patients’ visits.
An electronic communication system through Eisenhuth’s Web site enables patients to remain informed about their treatment, make appointments and view and pay their bills online. They also can complete paperwork, such as that required of new patients, online prior to their appointments.
“This has helped us greatly reduce the amount of paper we use in the office,” she said. “It also helps patients and parents of patients, because it provides an element of convenience. This information is at their disposal 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They no longer have to call during regular office hours to verify an appointment to ask about their account balance.”
Digital X-ray
Eisenhuth’s office uses digital tooth imaging technology, rather than traditional X-rays. Going digital is healthier for the environment and for patients.
“By using digital X-ray, the amount of radiation patients are exposed to is reduced by as much as 90 percent,” Eisenhuth said.
Going digital also eliminated the need for the toxic chemicals used in the traditional X-ray development process. Traditional X-ray requires the use of developers and developer system cleaners, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Web site.
“Traditional X-rays also are printed on lead-lined paper, which is very difficult on the environment when disposed of,” Eisenhuth said. “Digital X-rays eliminate this process, and allow us to print on a simple piece of copy paper.”
Digital X-ray images are stored on computers, which aids in keeping the office paperless.
Fewer Office Visits
There are various types of braces on the market now that promise faster results in fewer visits to the orthodontist. For example, the iBraces system results in fewer orthodontic visits because they require fewer wire adjustments, Eisenhuth said. Fewer visits mean patients and/or parents of patients to use less gasoline during treatment.
“That is good for the checkbook and the environment,” Eisenhuth said.
Recycling and Buying Recycled
Eisenhuth’s office also recycles as much as possible through the Dakota County Solid Waste and Recycling Division. Those items include:
• Cans – aluminum and steel
• Corrugated cardboard
• Glass bottles and jars
• Magazines and catalogs
• Mixed mail
• Newspaper
• Office paper
• Packing peanuts
• Plastic bags
• Plastic bottles with a neck
When purchasing office supplies such as copy paper and paper cups, Eisenhuth tries to purchase items made from recycled content whenever possible, she said.
“Some of our green practices are relatively small in the grand scheme of things, but we truly believe that every little bit helps,” Eisenhuth said.

This is good news! It’s great to know that more dentists and orthodontists are beginning to practice eco-dentistry. Not only are they taking their part in being earth friendly, they are also a good example for their patients and colleagues. I commend dental professionals who are eco-friendly!
