Four Reasons to Start Orthodontic Treatment in the Summer

ST. PAUL AND EAGAN, MINNESOTA – School is out and this is the perfect time to have your child evaluated for braces.
Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, an Eagan and St. Paul pediatric orthodontist, gives four reasons why summer is the best time to begin orthodontic treatment:

1. No Homework, No School
This allows your child plenty of time for start orthodontic treatment without his/her appointments conflicting with school schedules.
2. Time To Adjust
“Getting braces during the summer months allows your child time to adjust to wearing the appliances, and to get over the initial soreness,” says Dr. Eisenhuth, an Invisalign provider. Once the braces are put on, the teeth may feel uncomfortable for the first few days. After the teeth adjust to the new equipment, your child can return to their daily activities.
“School and homework are enough to worry about for a child,” says Dr. Eisenhuth. “We want our patients to start the school year feeling good about their smile.”

3. The Sooner The Better
The sooner a child gets their braces put on, the sooner they come off, says Dr. Eisenhuth, a children’s orthodontics expert.
Early intervention can prevent invasive treatment in the long run, so putting it off only leads to a longer, often more involved treatment. For instance, if your child has an underbite, they should be brought in now for evaluation.
Surgery frequently can be prevented when some malocclusions are identified and corrected early, while the jaw bones are still growing, says Dr. Eisenhuth, who provides braces for children and adults. There is no better time than the present.

4. Schedules Are Flexible
Summer vacation can make your schedule more flexible. Our pediatric orthodontics office can schedule your child in the morning or early afternoon, when they would usually be in school. The initial appointment may be lengthy, since your child is getting their braces put on. Scheduling this appointment during the summer prevents your child from missing school.

“We understand that education is important to parents and children,” says Dr. Eisenhuth. ‘Studies need to be the main focus when school starts, not their braces.”
Getting examined for orthodontic treatment during summer months allows children and parents to become adjusted to life with braces without the worries of school and homework. Once school begins, braces are one less thing to worry about.
