Many patients are missing permanent teeth and don't realize it because they think the teeth simply are taking longer to erupt. However, some patients are born with congenitally missing teeth, which can only be detected through X-ray technology.

ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – There is an old school of thought that patients in need of orthodontic treatment should wait until all of their adult teeth have erupted.

But what happens when some of those adult teeth never erupt? Patients can needlessly prolong treatment, making treatment time longer, said St. Paul orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth.

That is one reason why the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive an initial orthodontic evaluation by age 7. In addition to early treatment that can lessen the time a child spends in future treatment, an orthodontist can confirm that a child has all of his or her adult teeth, said Eisenhuth, who owns Cosmopolitan Orthodontics, an Eagan and St. Paul orthodontics practice. Orthodontist Dr. Trudy Bonvino, a St. Paul invisalign provider, is the orthodontist on staff there.

“We see a lot of patients in the exam room who are missing permanent teeth and are unaware of it,” Eisenhuth said.

Congenitally missing teeth, also referred to as tooth agenesis, occurs in almost 20 percent of the population, according to an article on www.dentalresource.org, a dental health Web site
( http://dentalresource.org/topics13.htm ). The bulk of these cases are missing third molars, or wisdom teeth. Most people are born with four wisdom teeth, but some can have just one, two or three.

Less than 3 percent of the American population has missing upper lateral incisors, while slightly more than 3 percent lacks second molars. Causes of agenesis can be endocrine, hereditary and environmental.

Eisenhuth and other St. Paul orthodontists determine whether patients have congenitally missing teeth by taking panoramic X-rays of the upper and lower jaws.

Dental Implants
There are ways to remedy the problem of congenitally missing teeth. Fixed bridges or dentures can restore a smile, but Eisenhuth prefers dental implants, especially in children. Implants are sturdy, look and feel like natural teeth and can last for years when properly cared for, said the St. Paul braces expert.

The process of getting dental implants varies according to the type of implant and the condition of the patient’s jawbone. Implants can’t be placed until the patient stops growing, which is at about age 18. Eisenhuth maintains the space where the tooth should be so there is room for the implant once it is placed.

For youth with healthy bone, the procedure is fairly simple and involves a metal anchor, a metal extension and a porcelain crown. The anchor is surgically placed into the patient’s jawbone to act as the tooth’s root. Over time, the anchor fuses to the bone and an extension is placed on top of it, which will be used to hold the crown once it is placed.

Porcelain crowns have the look and feel of natural teeth and enable Eisenhuth to complete orthodontic treatment in a manner that renders optimum results.

Other Uses for Dental Implants in Orthodontics

Dental implants do more than restore an orthodontic patients smile. Some experts say that dental implants are changing the way orthodontics is practiced, according to an article on Medical News Today (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/128987.php).

“In the past, we’ve used teeth as anchors to move other teeth,” Eisenhuth said. “But dental implants have made it possible for us to have an adequate anchor that applies force without causing unwanted movement to other teeth.”

Although Eisenhuth doesn’t place dental implants in her office, she often refers patients to an oral surgeon who can place them. Once they are placed, the implants can streamline treatment and decrease the length of time a patient is in braces, she said.

In some cases, dental implants remove the reliance on patient compliance to wear their appliances.

“We’ve been quite happy with the opportunities dental implants have created to improve patients’ smiles in a variety of ways,” Eisenhuth said.

Representatives from Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth's orthodontic practice attended the conference Feb. 18-20 as part of the office's ongoing effort to offer the most advanced technology and treatment available.

EAGAN, ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Members of Eagan, MN Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth’s team attended the Ortho2 User’s Group Meeting in Las Vegas recently.

In this case, what happened in Vegas will not stay in Vegas, said Eisenhuth, an Eagan orthodontics expert, who opened her Eagan orthodontics practice in 2003. Instead, the valuable information learned will be shared with the entire team.

“We send team members to conferences and seminars throughout the year because it’s important to us that we remain current on the latest technologies and techniques that will create a better experience for our patients, streamline processes, and improve treatment time and outcomes,” said the Eagan braces expert.

The User’s Group Meeting, held Feb. 18-20 at Caesar’s Palace, focused on software enhancements and the increased benefits they bring to the practice and to patients.

Some software in use at Eisenhuth’s office has allowed the practice to go paperless in additional areas, such as processing insurance claims online.

“We switched to electronic medical records years ago and that made a huge difference in the amount of paper we used in the office,” said Eisenhuth, an Eagan Invisalign provider. “Now new software is helping us go green in other areas by enabling us to make other processes paperless.”

Treatment software improvements in use in the Eagan braces providers’s office that benefit patients include animation features that serve as an educational tool by showing patients how appliances gradually will move their teeth into place.

“Sometimes having braces can seem like a slow process and sometimes it seems to patients like their teeth aren’t moving,” Minneapolis Orthodontist said. “Having animated software shows them how the treatment works and how their teeth eventually will come into proper alignment. I like to think it gives them hope if they become discouraged.”

Self-ligating braces have been proven to reduce orthodontic treatment time for patients, and Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth is using an aesthetically pleasing, custom designed bracket called Incognito to get great results for patients.

ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – When considering braces that are comfortable, sleek and customized to reduce treatment time, Incognito braces have become the go-to appliance for Eagan and Burnsville Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth.

Now that 3M Unitek, the company that manufactures Incognito, has created a self-ligating option, these appliances can reduce treatment time even further while rendering optimum results.

Incognito braces hit the market several years ago under the brand name iBraces. The company recently rebranded the product, said Eisenhuth, whose practice treats Eagan and Burnsville orthodontics patients with a variety of orthodontic appliances.

Incognito braces are the only braces on the market that are entirely customized to fit the contours of each individual patient’s teeth. Because they are lingual braces, meaning they fit onto the back of the teeth, no one will notice them.

Add in the self-ligating feature, and Incognito braces easily can be switched from passive to active mode. Eisenhuth said she likes the appliances because she can choose the level of engagement between each bracket and the archwire. They can be passive for aligning and leveling the teeth, or active for finishing.

This feature also is sometimes referred to as self-ligation “on demand,” meaning it is there when you need it or not when you don’t.

“It’s the best of both worlds, essentially,” she said.

Several studies have shown that self-ligating brackets reduce frictional forces, shorten the time a patient is in orthodontic treatment and offer easier, quicker archwire changes, said the Eagan and Burnsville invisible braces expert.

How The Process Works

The first step in getting Incognito brackets is consulting with Eisenhuth to determine whether each patient is a viable candidate for the appliances.

“Nearly everyone is a candidate,” she said, adding that Incognito braces can be used on adults and children. “Typically, you’re a traditional braces candidate, you also will be a good candidate for Incognito braces.”
To achieve the customized fit that is characteristic of Incognito braces, Eisenhuth takes an impression of the patient’s teeth. That impression is scanned into a computer and a skilled lab technician presents information back to Eisenhuth that she uses to accurately determine each patient’s treatment needs. The scanned impression also is used to create a 3-D model of the teeth.
Using that model, a lab technician creates the customized brackets and custom archwires that have been bent by a robot specifically for each patient. All appliances are sent back to the orthodontist, who bonds them onto the patient’s teeth.

The fabrication process takes approximately six weeks, and bonding the braces onto the teeth takes less than an hour.

Eisenhuth frequently uses Incognito braces on adult professionals who want the benefits of more comfortable, fast-acting treatment without others noticing that they are wearing braces, she said. She also uses them on teenagers who are active in contact sports and run the risk of occasionally being inadvertently hit in the mouth. She also recommends that children involved in contact sports wear custom-fitted mouth guards while engaging in those activities to protect not only the patient’s orthodontic appliances, but also the teeth.

Musicians who play wind instruments and people who simply are self-conscious about wearing braces that others can see are other good candidates for Incognito braces.

Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth and members of her staff are taking a course through Argosy University in conjunction with the Minnesota Orthodontist Association on dental practice business success.

EAGAN, ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Eagan orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth and some members of her office staff are participating in a continuing education course offered at Argosy University, in conjunction with the Minnesota Orthodontist Association.

Eisenhuth and staff members at her Eagan orthodontics practice attend a variety of courses and educational workshops each year on everything from learning the latest orthodontic treatment methods to business administration.

“We want to be the best orthodontics practice in the area, so that means cultivating a great team,” said the Eagan braces expert.

To accomplish that, Eisenhuth encourages staff to find educational opportunities in all aspects of the practice, including orthodontic techniques, business administration, customer relations and human resources.

“When all areas of our practice are functioning at a high level, we can better provide a great experience for our patients, in addition to great treatment results,” Eisenhuth said.

The current course Eisenhuth and her staff are taking is titled “Managing and Growing Your Practice.” The six-month course began in January and covers topics including business planning, accounting, finance, leadership and human resources.

Eisenhuth is particularly interested in the leadership portion of the course because she feels that leadership is the cornerstone of good employee and patient relations and morale. It also promotes a smooth-running practice that leaves patients feeling confident in their treatment, said the Eagan Invisalign provider.

“I firmly believe that an office never can have too many leadership tools at its disposal,” Eisenhuth said.

The course includes one-on-one consulting with a leadership professional to discuss existing leadership within the practice, and to create a personalized leadership plan. A follow-up one-on-one session will give staff an opportunity to work on integrating leadership tools into the practice’s customized business plan.

“I honestly feel as though we have a great orthodontics practice and an amazing staff that provides excellent care day in and day out,” Eisenhuth said. “But continuing education is important for us to learn new and better ways of doing things. I also think it shows our patients that we continually strive to provide the best experience for them, both in treatment and their routine dealings with our support staff.”

National Children's Dental Health Month is observed every February and is sponsored by the American Dental Association. Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth participates in NCDHM activities each year.

EAGAN, ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, an Eagan and St. Paul orthodontist, will observe National Children’s Dental Health Month in February by educating students on oral care and reenforcing good habits.

Eisenhuth celebrates the awareness month each year by getting out into the community and into area schools to give away toothbrushes, dental floss and toothpaste, she said. She also speaks to classes on the importance of caring properly for teeth so children can keep them for a lifetime.

The campaign is sponsored each year by the American Dental Association and this year’s poster features a message for children from the McGrinn Twins, Flossy and Buck: “For a sparkly smile, remember to brush and floss every day!” on one side. On the opposite side is a message geared toward pre-teens and teens: “Rock your smile.”

Eisenhuth’s St. Paul orthodontics practice shares the ADA’s vision of the campaign, and that is to make sure children understand the importance of oral health. The NCDHM message and campaign materials have reached millions of people throughout the country over the years.
“It is imperative to encourage and teach children about developing good habits,” said Eisenhuth, a St. Paul, MN Invisalign provider. “That, combined with routine dental check-ups and professional cleanings creates a strong foundation for what we hope is a lifetime of healthy gums and teeth.”
On Feb. 5-6, about 2,500 Minnesota dentals professionals will donate their time to provide free care to thousands of low-income children. This is part of a nationwide event known as Give Kids A Smile, which is held in conjunction with NCDHM. For more information on this, visit the Minnesota Dental Association’s Web site.

NCDHM started as a one-day observance in Cleveland, Ohio on Feb. 3, 1941, followed by a one-week event in Akron that same month, according to the ADA.

The ADA created the first nationwide observance of Children’s Dental Health Day eight years later. It grew into a week-long event in 1955, and became a month-long campaign known by its current name in 1981.

PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Lots of patients ask about clear brackets when getting braces, but some brands are giving other clear brackets an undeserved bad reputation for staining easily.

It’s true that some brands of less expensive clear brackets become discolored with wear, said Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, who owns an Eagan and Minneapolis, MN orthodontics practice. Foods such as tomato sauces, soft drinks, coffee, tea and grape juices can discolor some clear brackets over time.

However, there are some quality brackets on the market that do not stain. The Minneapolis, MN orthodontist uses Inspire ICE brackets, manufactured by Ormco Orthodontics. The brackets, made from crystal-clear sapphire, are more stain resistant than brackets made from porcelain or plastic compounds, which can be more porous.

Foods and fruit juices also can stain elastic ties around the brackets, but Eisenhuth said that isn’t much of a problem because those are changed at each orthodontic visit, which typically is every six weeks.

ICE brackets also are the only entirely transparent bracket on the market and they practically disappear once placed on the teeth, according to the Ormco Orthodontics Web site.

“The enamel on our teeth has a pigment and everyone’s tooth color is slightly different, which makes it difficult to find a tooth-colored bracket to match everyone,” said Eisenhuth, the Minneapolis, MN braces expert. “Using this clear colored, high-quality bracket means that it pulls in the color from the teeth, no matter what shade the teeth are.”

In addition to the aesthetic benefits of ICE brackets, Ormco touts the strength of their product, stating that the brackets are two times as resistant to breakage as other ceramic appliances. They also require less force when they are removed from the teeth and they have a smooth profile that provides optimum comfort for wearers.

“Overall, I like the brackets because it’s smaller, it looks nice and it responds well to movement,” Eisenhuth said. “We’ve had really good results for the two years or so that we’ve used them.”

Good Hygiene Can Prevent Stains And Improve Treatment
Even patients with clear brackets that aren’t ICE brackets can take measures to ensure they stay looking aesthetically pleasing, Eisenhuth said.

“I can’t stress enough the importance of having an electric toothbrush, such as a SoniCare brush,” she said.

Brushing within 20 minutes after eating foods or drinking beverages that can stain the teeth and the brackets is a good practice for keeping teeth white and tooth decay at bay. On average, braces wearers should brush their teeth two to four times daily with a non-whitening toothpaste. Using a whitening toothpaste only whitens the portions of the teeth that aren’t covered by brackets, so once those brackets are removed, patients can be left with spots on their teeth where the brackets were.

Patients with clear brackets often also have clear ligatures, so it is important to have the ligatures changed regularly, as they can stain more quickly than the brackets.

The cleaner the brackets, the less friction created as far as orthodontic movement goes, Eisenhuth said. That means the braces can move the teeth faster. Patients who do not brush and floss properly run the risk of getting inflamed gums, which can make it more difficult for the orthodontist to properly align the teeth.

Interproximal reduction can create needed space between teeth, which enables orthodontists to align the teeth properly in conjunction with orthodontic treatment .

ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Crowded teeth are a common trait in many patients who seek orthodontic treatment.

Sometimes achieving ideal alignment requires more than simply shifting teeth. In some cases of overcrowding, interproximal reduction helps provide enough room to align teeth properly, said Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, an Eagan and St. Paul, MN orthodontist.

“Interproximal reduction is a technique I often use in conjunction with Invisalign treatment, ” said Eisenhuth, who is an Eagan and St. Paul, MN Invisalign provider. “It can provide quicker results in many cases when combined with orthodontics.”

Interproximal reduction is the removal of a tiny amount of enamel between teeth to slightly decrease their width. This technique also is known as slenderizing, enamel reduction, stripping, selective reduction or reproximation.

How the Process Works
First, Eisenhuth must determine if the patient is a candidate for the procedure by considering each individual patient’s teeth shape and size, their alignment, positions and the patient’s facial features.

Front teeth create the framework upon which the lips rest, so their position alone plays an important role in a person’s facial appearance.

Once Eisenhuth, St. Paul Invisible Braces Expert, identifies which teeth to slenderize, she uses a small, flexible file strip- referred to as a lightning strip- to gently remove tiny layers of the enamel along the sides of the teeth, she said. The small amount of enamel removed does not affect the tooth, which remains healthy and sound.

This procedure creates the necessary space to allow the teeth to be shifted into place and fit closely together without being overcrowded. This shifting process helps Eisnehuth create an ideal bite pattern and appearance for each patient.

Because most teeth are wider at the bottom and taper slightly at the gum, interproximal reduction sometimes helps prevent what is known as a “black triangle.” This is the open space that often results when two neighboring teeth don’t fit tightly against each other near the gumline, which creates the appearance of a dark hole or space, Eisenhuth, a St. Paul Braces Expert, said.

“My goal as an orthodontist is to properly align each patient’s teeth in a manner that best promotes good oral health, and also to create the most aesthetically pleasing smile possible,” she said. “A black triangle can detract from that beautiful smile, so having a technique such as interproximal reduction at my disposal offers a simple, painless way to correct that.”

Once Eisenhuth has performed interproximal reduction on a patient, she may recommend a topical flouride treatment and a flouride rinse to use for a short time. This can help teeth maintain their resistance to tooth decay.

In some cases, patients may experience slightly increased tooth sensitivity in the area after interproximal reduction, but this can be alleviated by using a toothpaste designed for aiding in tooth sensitivity.

Eagan and Minneapolis Orthodontics Practice Participates in Toys for Tots

EAGAN, ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Minneapolis Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth is participating in the Toys for Tots program for the third straight year.

Eisenhuth’s patients have been asked to bring in new, unwrapped toys to donate to the charity, and those who donate will be entered into a drawing to become the Eagan and Minneapolis orthodontics practice’s official spokesperson on Dec. 10 when the toys are delivered to the KARE 11 television station during the afternoon newscast.

“We’re trying to give our young patients more opportunities to be involved in community events,” said Eisenhuth, a Minneapolis braces expert.

The winning patient who gets to be the spokesperson will be picked up in a party bus or limousine and taken to the television station to deliver the toys. He or she will get to be interviewed on-air and tell how many toys were collected and how the office went about collecting them.

“The patients seem really excited about the opportunity,” Eisenhuth said. “Our toy box is almost full and we have about 30 names in our drawing jar so far.”

All patients who donate a toy receive a token, which is part of Eisenhuth’s ongoing reward program in her office. Patients collect the tokens and can cash them in for items such as gift cards.

Eisenhuth is pleased with the participation so far.

“Our patients have been very generous and for that, we are grateful,” said Invialign orthodontist Dr. Eisenhuth. “This will be a tough holiday season for some families this year, so we’re trying to do our best to help as many families as we can with our donations.”

Anyone interested in donating toys to Toys for Tots can drop them off at Eisenhuth’s Eagan office location between now and Dec. 10 at noon.

Toys for tots Began in 1947, when Maj. Bill Hendricks, USCR and a group of Los Angeles Marine Reservists collected and distributed 5,000 new and refurbished toys to underprivileged children.
Since 1980, Marines have collected and distributed only new toys. This is due to changes in the 1970s that prevented Marine Reservists from having time during drill weekends to refurbish used toys. “Hand me down” toys also didn’t send the message the Marines wanted to send to children in need, according to the organization’s Web site .

“The goal is to deliver a message of hope, which will assist in building self-esteem and, in turn, motivate less fortunate children to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders,” the site stated. “A shiny, new toy is the best means of accomplishing this goal.”

Oral piercings may seem cool, but their long-term wear can cause serious oral health issues.

ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Facial piercings in the lips, tongue and cheeks have become popular forms of self-expression among teens and young adults.

But for those considering a facial piercing, there are some important factors to consider first, said Minnesota Orthodontist Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth. While they may appear stylish to some, there are some oral health risks associated with this trend.

Many people who have these facial piercings develop a habit of playing with them. For example, those with tongue rings sometimes run the barbell against their teeth or bite on it. This can damage the surface of the teeth and even chip teeth. Eating with this jewelry in can chip the teeth as well, Eisenhuth said.

Lip rings can rub against the teeth and scratch the surface or even wear a groove in them. For patients with braces, there is a slight chance that oral piercing jewelry can damage orthodontic appliances, which could lengthen treatment time. Patients who wear clear aligners don’t have this problem, said Eisenhuth, who also is a Minnesota invisible braces provider.

Other problems associated with oral piercing jewelry include increased tooth sensitivity, gum damage and gum recession.

Researchers from Ohio State University College of Dentistry and the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry conducted research on 52 people with pierced tongues and discovered that among those whose tongue piercings had been in place for four years or longer, 35 percent of them had experienced gum recession.

Among people in the study who had worn long-stemmed barbells for two years or longer, half of them were diagnosed with receding gums.

“Long barbells have an increased opportunity to damage the gums because they reach the gums more easily than short barbells,” Eisenhuth said. “Gum recession is bad on its own, but long-term consequences can mean some pretty significant dental problems.”
Eisenhuth said she is particularly surprised when her orthodontic patients have facial or oral piercings.

“These are patients who are here to improve their smiles, their self-confidence and their long-term oral health by undergoing orthodontic treatment,” said the Minnesota braces specialist. “To put something near your teeth that can work against all the improvements being made through orthodontic treatment doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

Infection is another common side effect of oral piercings, often because of touching them or getting food caught around the piercing site.

“Touching oral piercings increases the opportunity for bacteria from your hands to enter piercing sites,” said Eisenhuth.

Bleeding and nerve damage is an issue for some with facial piercings. Damaging the tongue’s blood vessels can cause serious blood loss. These piercings also can cause swelling and discomfort. When it comes to tongue piercings, the tongue can swell enough to close off the airway, Eisenhuth said.

Facial and oral piercing jewelry, which can include studs, rings, barbells and hoops, can affect a person’s ability to eat and speak properly.

Patients of Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth donated Halloween candy during the orthodontic practice’s annual Halloween candy buyback program. The candy will be sent to U.S. soldiers currently stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with toothbrushes and dental floss.

ST. PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – Patients of the Apple Valley orthodontics practice of Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth gave generously once again this year during her annual candy buy-back program.
Patients donated close to 800 pounds of candy, which will be donated to U.S. Troops serving overseas, said Eisenhuth, an Apple Valley, MN orthodontist.

The candy buy-back program, which is in its fifth year, was designed to remove the temptation among Eisenhuth’s patients to eat chewy, sticky candies that could damage their braces by donating those potentially damaging candies in exchange for tokens that could be turned in for prizes. Patients received one token for every pound of candy they donated, and prizes included gift cards and toys.

The donated candy is shipped to U.S. soldiers who are stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Eisenhuth also ships toothbrushes and dental floss along with the candy, she said.
“Eating candy is fine, as long as you brush your teeth afterward,” said the Apple Valley Invisalign provider. “That’s why we include the dental care products in our care package to the soldiers.”
Eisenhuth said she is amazed each year by her patients’ generosity.

“We ask them to donate the candies they get during Halloween festivities that might harm their braces,” she said. “But we find that once the patients learn that the candy will be given to soldiers, they often donate candy that would have been OK for them to eat.”

Eisenhuth’s staff collected all of the candy on Nov. 2 and soon will box it up and ship it to Iraq.
“We get lots of e-mails from soldiers who receive the candy, thanking us for the treats,” Eisenhuth, an Apple Valley orthodontist, said.

Soldiers frequently give the candy and the toothbrushes to the children they encounter in remote areas of Afghanistan and Iraq.
